I’ll keep things brief today. This is just one of those topics that I felt placed upon my heart quite out of no where. In fact, I was putting make up on at 6:30 am when this message came into my head.
Do you ever have days or moments as a parent when you think “oh boy, what did I get myself into with this one?” “I’ve got to make it through how many years of parenting?!” “How is this my child??” “Oh this is definitely my spouse’s child.” Or just plain and simple, “What on Earth is going on here?”
I’m going to take a very certain guess that if you’ve been a parent for more than 1 minute you have had some thought like this. I mean let’s face, the moment that baby pops out and is placed in your arms “what on earth is going on here?!” Starts going through your mind. For my husband and I, this was very true. Soon after Emmalynn was born the nurses and doctor were out the door waving and congratulating us. Emmalynn using her new found voice (a very shrill one at that) left us watching the nurses close the door thinking “um, you do hear this right?! And you’re just leaving us. What on earth is going on?!”
Maybe your child entered into your family by means of adoption or foster care. The story still stands true. They make us question what we are doing, why God thought we could handle this, and how we ever thought this was a good idea. Don’t get me wrong, they are blessings beyond all measure. They do know how to test us in every which way though.
So today if you’re feeling discouraged as parent, if you feel like you’re just messing up, and if you are questioning if you are parent material remember this- You were CHOSEN by God for your child!
This morning as the phrase “you were chosen for this child” went through my head I felt so encouraged. I don’t feel like all days will be great or that I will enjoy the temper tantrums (trust me, I do not!), but I feel excited that God blessed me with my baby girl. He intricately designed her uniquely and He gave her to ME!! Wow! What a responsibility. God knew the child He was giving my husband and me long before we ever did. My God doesn’t do willy nilly, eenie meenie miney mo, choosing either! He is deliberate, intentional, omniscient. He knew exactly what He was giving us, and He knows exactly the child He gave, is giving, or will give to you.

So on days when you start to question “how can I raise this child?” Start praying for God’s wisdom, and every bit of grace and mercy He has for when you fail, and remember: You were CHOSEN for this child.
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations. Jeremiah 1:5
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 139:13-14
Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children. Proverbs 17:6
